Howth, Co Dublin, Ireland : Howth (rhymes with "both") is nearly an island, but not quite. It's located in Dublin county just north of the city, not far from the airport. Walking along the Cliff Walk, you feel a million miles from everything. There's a fishing harbor on the north side.

Glendalough, Co Wicklow, Ireland : Glendalough is the site of a monastic ruin -- most famously an old round tower that the monks used for retreat in case they were attacked. There are some nice walks, leading down to a lake and up into the hills. The area is about 45 minutes drive south from Dublin. Best of 4 walks.

Quarantine! Ireland : Our dog and cat spent 2.5 months at Lissenhall. It's the only approved quarantine in Ireland, and it's not very nice. You can avoid sending your pets here if you chip them and get them tested for antibodies to rabies vaccine 6 months before you move -- we would highly recommend you do that instead of sending them to Lissenhall. Ours had worked off 3.5 months, but needed 2.5 more to avoid Irish quarantine. In retrospect, we wish we had left our animals at the kennel we used in Switzerland to work off the remaining 2.5 months, then flown them over later. In the Swiss kennel, our dog would have been outside playing with other dogs for 5 hours a day, vs. locked solitary in a cage for 2.5 months alone.
